Thus the addiction in its own circuitous way may be trying to bring us back to the God within—embodied spirit—Incarnation. Rachel V: This idea of becoming like a child to enter the kingdom of God, do you know of other cultures where we find this image?  In other words, matter is penetrated by spirit and the child of the union of matter and spirit is the divine child.  The addiction has made receptivity possible. Many of us cannot understand how powerful femininity is until we are brought to our knees through addiction or illness.

Is it a distortion of spirit?  What I would say is that in the heroconsciousness of the Greeks, the hero was fighting unconsciousness and trying to get a little glimmer of consciousness.  George and the dragon, for example. P: But you're not speaking of a very developed, complete form of consciousness, are you?  It happens in the individual as he or she matures, and I see it in terms of the macrocosm as well. P: So you see this as a critical point in history.  If you've ever been an addict, you know that you can always be an addict again, so it's at that point that the energy, if opened to, becomes available again and again.

These points of transition where we are called to stretch into new maturity are the points where the addiction is most liable to resurface.  With this steady perceptive awareness, I think it is possible to reach the point of stillness that is free of the addiction.  The pain of leaving the old life behind and facing the new without any real understanding of who we are becomes unendurable.
