For example, much of the growth of Phoenix has depended on water transported from the Colorado River, the natural course of which goes nowhere near the city. Similarly, the expansion of Los Angeles resulted in part from massive investments that moved water from fertile, inland agricultural areas to the growing metropolitan area on the coast. Even where water used for urban purposes remains in the same drainage basin, however, urban development often disrupts the hydrologic cycle on which the water sources depend.
