Griffith, when he left Biograph in 1913 with his entire stock company after making Judith of Bethulia on an elaborate (and expensive) set in the San Fernando Valley. Yet most of the big companies—Biograph, Vitagraph, Famous Players–Lasky— still maintained offices in the New York area, where even in the heyday of the studio system the executive offices and finance still resided.

Chicago was also the home of Photoplay, one of the first and the most long-lived of fan magazines. Begun in 1911 with a producer-oriented focus on characters and plots, by 1915 it had changed into a vehicle for stories about rising and reigning movie stars, even to the extent in 1920 of giving its own Best Film award, which anticipated the Oscars by several years. Staid old Los Angeles was also beginning to take notice. In the fall of 1914, the Los Angeles Times began a breezy weekly column called “Film Flams” written by Grace Kingsley and featuring more or less innocuous behind-the-scenes stories of films in production and other industry doings.
